‘The Dream of Gerontius: Through the Gate of Death’ will explore the Journey from life, through death and to the beyond, through the lens of Newman’s poem and Elgar’s music, but also including a recognition of anxieties around dying and the benefits of good quality ‘end of life’ care. This event, which is being presented by the Oxford Centre for Spiritual Growth (OCSG) will take place on Thursday 12th October at Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, starting with refreshments at 7.45pm.
The evening will include contributions from Stephen Darlington, Director of Music at Christ Church, Angela Tilby, Canon Emeritus of Christ Church and Keri Thomas, internationally-known expert on ‘end of life’ care. They will be exploring the journey from this life to the next in the context of John Henry Newman’s poem, The Dream of Gerontius, and Elgar’s extraordinary choral setting of the poem.
Keri Thomas will share some of her extensive experience in the field of ‘End of Life Care’, looking at sensitive approaches towards those who are dying and those who love them and are able to accompany them.
There will be some opportunity to ask the panel questions and the evening will be facilitated by Revd Georgie Simpson and Ecumenical Canon Robin Gibbons.
The OCSG, based at the Church of St Michael at the North Gate, exists to encourage people to be more reflective and to explore the deeper meaning of life and what it is to be human. OCSG was founded and is directed by Revd Georgie Simpson, an experienced spiritual director, who aims to inspire people to make connections between art, music, poetry and spirituality, thus enlivening and deepening faith.
